Want to self-publish?

Join thousands of other authors!

Self-publishing is hard. And it can be expensive! So many little things come up that you wouldn't have thought of:

  • Cover art and design
  • Formatting and tools
  • Editors
  • Marketers
  • Copyright...
  • ISBNs!

And that's just scratching the surface! Cliff Cave Books would like to step up and offer a low cost ISBN that can follow your books anywhere, not just on Amazon or some other aggregate.

Take it anywhere - List a publisher!

Certain print-on-demand (POD) companies will offer a free ISBN during setup. This sounds like a great offer!

EXCEPT

Your book will belong to them, and you can not take your manuscript to other retailers. With an ISBN from Cliff Cave Books, you can - and you will have a publisher listed in your front matter and description, which adds an air of professionalism to your work.

qUALIFIERS: Please READ!

The Cliff Cave Books (CCB) goal is to minimize broad categorization and specialize in specific genre niches to create a name for itself as a specific type of publisher. Therefore, the generally desired genres are listed below, with some limitations to a few. See the next tab for details on limitations:

  • Horror (limited)
  • Sci-Fi (all kinds, limited)
  • Fantasy (all kinds, limited)
  • Thriller
  • Mystery
  • Cozy
  • LitRPG
  • Non Fiction

Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy:

The chart above illustrates the type of horror that can have the CCB label. Anything that extends beyond a 7 on the scale is not acceptable - see the next tab for more descriptive details.

Fantasy:

Cliff Cave Books does not support Romantasy, Erotica, or anything bordering on pornography of any kind. If a submission is assigned an ISBN and is found to have these elements, CCB will withdraw the ISBN for use without refund.

There are certain types of manuscripts that Cliff Cave Books (CCB) deems not suitable for the label. While creativity is encouraged, and controversial topics accepted, there are a few guidelines that will disqualify a book from ISBN representation. The following list includes, but is not limited to, the most egregious disqualifiers:

  1. Graphic violence toward children (passing comments of trauma are fine, with limits)
  2. Graphic violence against animals / pets (passing comments of trauma are fine, with limits)
  3. Splatter punk of any kind
  4. Violence for the sake of violence
  5. Graphic sexual content (closed door and passing comments are fine)
  6. Excessive foul language (a few words here and there are fine, but keep it PG-13)

As the brand expands, and more time becomes available, I hope to be able to offer the following services in addition to ISBNs:

  1. Cover design
  2. Set up consultations
  3. Story consultations

Use the form to the right (or below if using your phone) to fill out your application. Anything with a red asterisk next to the question is a required field.

These fields are necessary to assign the ISBN. If more information is necessary, I will be in touch.

Keep in mind that if this is a book in the middle of a series, I can't assign an ISBN unless it's book 1 of the series. E-books don't always require a number, but print does. If you'd like to have your book in paperback as well as hardback formats, you need two (2) ISBNs to cover those. Make sure to list them on your front matter!

For examples on how to include the necessary components of your front matter, please keep scrolling!

What is an ISBN?

ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number," which is a required feature of any paperback (and sometime digital) book.

They can be assigned for free through print on demand publishers such as Amazon and Draft 2 Digital, or purchased through Bowker.

ISBNs through Cliff Cave Books are $6 each, or discounted in multiples.

What is an Imprint?

The imprint is the publishing information that you can include in your book, as well as your metadata on your publishing platform. Publishing imprints for self-published authors add a layer of professionalism and credibility to their book.

What does it include?

Well, the logo of course! Also, you can list CCB as your point of contact if you'd like to stay anonymous while using a pen name.

What kind of support?

Cliff Cave Books is only ran by one person, R.E. Holding, who is also a self-published author.

Therefore, aside from general ISBN acquisition, support is limited to general discourse on how to load a book into a print on demand platform, as well as providing the imprint for use inside the book.

What kind of space?

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, there is a drop-down list under "Authors." If you sign up with CCB, your pen name will be listed here, as well as navigation to your own spot on the site.

What does it include?

  • A photo of your choice, whether personal, a drawing, or a landscape of sorts.
  • Your author blurb
  • A list of books by you in a gallery style
  • Any social media links you'd like to include

You will also be featured as a new author on the home page for a month!

What does this mean?

Since Cliff Cave Books is run by a single author, there are no editing services available, which includes:

  • Developmental edits
  • Copy edits

However, CCB can help you find a professional in these areas that might suit your budget.

What does this mean?

  • Book printing and physical sales

What does this mean?

Since Cliff Cave Books is run by a single author and is neither a vanity publisher, nor a hybrid publisher, there are no marketing services available, which includes (but is not limited to):

  • Placing ads for your book
  • Setting up ad campaigns on any platform
  • Advertising your book on any platform other than this site
  • Financial support

However, CCB can help you find a professional in these areas that might suit your budget.

What does this mean?

Copyrighting your work is something every author wants to do to protect their intellectual property! This is done through the copyright office, and not through a publisher or a publishing label (such as CCB).

If you need help obtaining a copyright, you can order a consultation slot through me, and I can help you with that.

What does this mean?

Cliff Cave Books does not own any printers, any software, materials, or space to print physical books in any form.

Equipment such as these are rather expensive to buy and maintain, and while CCB has aspirations of a greater future, the ability to do this is not here yet.
