The Many Colors of Gold

Book 1 of the Northern Roseaarde Series

Loren wants to be a roundsman.

When his stepfather forces him into an expensive Guild program to find his “gift,” he discovers a new way to live among friends, and in the shadow of capital conspiracies.

Already with a special gift of his own, he grew up with the ability to visualize the world around him in an array of colors whenever he closes his eyes. Even if he never understood it before, he begins to wonder whether they’re linked to otherworldly forces communicating with him. Yet, a chance meeting with a classmate shows him how their connection can strengthen his natural gift into a new type of experience he tries to master.

His new life takes many turns as he realizes he doesn’t know much about the world he lives in or really, who he is, which puts the people he’s grown to love at risk. As his devotion to his friends becomes stronger, and his view of Guild careers becomes more jaded, he must decide whether to engage in a series of ancient rites to save those he loves, and risk unleashing a force once only thought to be found in childhood fables.

THE MANY COLORS OF GOLD is a spin on a blended urban dark fantasy. It's Red Rising meets The Poppy War.

The Story Behind The Many Colors of Gold

The entire world of Roseaarde was born from a horrific nightmare in the early 2000s. All it took was a single scene and dream journal diligence to form the lives of Lor and his friends as they make choices that bring them into that scene.

Much of The Many Colors of Gold's world-building was created over the course of around 20 years. Ultimately, about 10% of that world-building remained.

Who knew being an adult had to be so violent?

In a world where individuals are defined by their unique "gifts," Loren Turtingas is about to discover he is far more dangerous than he ever imagined. Forced into a Guild program, he'd rather fail and pursue his passion for Law, but fate has other plans.

Lor's journey takes a sharp turn when he meets the mysterious Paerli, who seems to know more about his abilities than he does. He also falls for the compassionate Damaetra, but a dangerous plan will threaten her life and force Lor to confront the true nature of his powers. He must navigate betrayals, secret rituals, and a looming threat to save her.

Haunted by visions and a connection to forgotten history, Lor must decide whether to embrace his dark gift or forge his own path. Teaming up with friends like Dill, an Engineer with a knack for tech, and Nico, a Formulator with a hidden past, Lor embarks on a perilous journey to Mount Gehenna.

Will he master his abilities, or will he become a pawn in a game much larger than himself?

You speak of darkness. Do you truly know it? You say it is dark because the candle has gone out? You think it dark because the moons hide their faces behind a cloud? You feel it is dark because your eyes are closed? You do not know true darkness. True darkness is not the absence of light; it is the absence of hope.
